What We Walked Into

June is when mosquito calls really start picking up across the California Coast & Bay Area. Once the weather warms up and people start spending more time outside, mosquitoes become hard to ignore pretty quickly.

A couple of weeks ago, we got a call from a homeowner who said their backyard had basically become unusable in the evenings. They mentioned getting bitten almost immediately after stepping outside, especially near the patio and side yard. At first, they thought it was just part of summer, but it kept getting worse.

When we arrived, the property itself looked well maintained. The lawn was trimmed, the patio was clean, and nothing immediately looked out of place. But mosquito issues usually come down to small things people don’t notice day to day.

Mosquito

The Problem

Once we started looking around, the source of the activity became clearer.

There were a few areas around the yard where water had been collecting without anyone realizing it. One section near the side yard drainage stayed damp most of the time, and there was standing water sitting in a couple of decorative planters that weren’t draining properly.

We also found clogged sections in the gutters where water had been sitting for a while. That’s a common mosquito breeding area, especially this time of year.

Around the patio, there were shaded areas with thick plants and very little airflow. Mosquitoes tend to rest in cool, damp spaces during the day, then become active later in the afternoon and evening.

The homeowner had already tried citronella candles and store-bought sprays, but the relief only lasted a short time. The issue wasn’t really the mosquitoes they could see. It was the conditions around the property that were allowing them to keep reproducing.

At that point, the problem wasn’t just annoyance anymore. The family had stopped using parts of the yard altogether because they were tired of getting bitten every evening.

Why Mosquito Activity Matters

Mosquitoes become much more active in June because warmer temperatures speed up their breeding cycle. It doesn’t take much standing water for them to multiply. Even a small amount sitting for several days can turn into a breeding spot.

A lot of homeowners think mosquitoes are just part of summer, but ongoing activity around a home usually means there’s a source nearby supporting it.

The other issue is that mosquitoes don’t travel very far from where they hatch. If you’re constantly seeing them around your patio, garage area, or entry points, there’s a good chance they’re breeding somewhere close by.

Beyond being frustrating, mosquitoes can also carry bacteria and diseases, and constant bites make it hard to comfortably use outdoor spaces.

For this homeowner, it wasn’t panic. They just wanted to enjoy their backyard again without feeling like they had to rush back inside every evening.

The Process

We started with a full inspection of the property to figure out where the mosquitoes were breeding and where they were spending time during the day.

Most mosquito issues come down to conditions around the yard, so we focused on finding the areas that were supporting the activity instead of just treating what was visible.

We checked the gutters and drainage areas first, since standing water tends to build up there without homeowners noticing.

After that, we looked through the yard at planters, containers, and shaded sections near the patio where moisture was sticking around longer than it should.

Once we identified the main problem areas, we treated the active mosquito zones and

Everything was handled step by step. The goal wasn’t just temporary relief for a few days. It was reducing the overall mosquito activity around the property moving forward.

The Outcome

Within a couple of weeks, the difference around the yard was noticeable.

The homeowner mentioned they could finally sit outside in the evenings again without constantly swatting mosquitoes away. The patio area felt usable again, especially later in the day when activity had been the worst before.

They also said they started paying closer attention to drainage and standing water around the property, which helped keep the activity from building back up.

That’s usually the biggest change with mosquito work. People stop thinking about avoiding certain parts of their yard and start using those spaces normally again.

DIY Tips

Before we left, we went over a few simple things they could stay on top of during the summer months.

We suggested checking the yard regularly for anything holding standing water, even small containers or planter trays. Cleaning gutters and making sure water drains properly also helps reduce breeding areas.

We recommended trimming back dense plants near patios and walkways to improve airflow and reduce shaded resting spots for mosquitoes.

Another thing we mentioned was changing outdoor pet water and birdbath water regularly instead of letting it sit for days at a time.

Small changes like these make a noticeable difference when they’re done consistently.

Mosquito Prevention

Professional Help

Mosquitoes are one of those pests where sprays alone usually don’t solve the issue long-term.

If the breeding areas around the property stay the same, mosquito activity usually comes right back. That’s why inspections and identifying moisture or drainage problems matter just as much as treatment itself.

Most of the mosquito calls we get across the California Coast & Bay Area are from homeowners who already tried temporary solutions and realized the activity kept returning.

That’s usually when it makes sense to take a closer look at the property as a whole instead of only treating the symptoms.

Final Thoughts

June is usually when mosquito activity becomes hard to ignore.

If you’re noticing mosquitoes every evening around the same areas of your home, it’s worth paying attention to what’s supporting them before the problem gets worse later in the summer.

If you need help or just want someone to take a look, we’re here.
